Gordon Common Good SCIO held its Annual General Meeting at Gordon Village Hall on Monday 3 August 2026, where trustees reported on a year of significant change for the charity with a broadened purpose, two much-loved village events brought under its wing, and a healthy set of accounts, despite the hall being forced to close for eight weeks over the winter after a ceiling collapse.
The year in detail
The most significant development of the year was the restructuring of the charity. Previously known as Gordon Village Hall SCIO, which has a focus solely on running the hall, the organisation became Gordon Common Good SCIO, a change made to widen its work and serve the community more fully. Our constitution was updated at the same time to reflect that broader purpose, and to allow more trustees to join the board.
Gowkfest and the Flower Show join the charity.
During the year both the village music festival, now Gowkfest, and the annual Flower Show became part of the charity, after each group voted to come under its umbrella. Bringing these events together with the hall under a single organisation strengthens community life in Gordon and puts all three on a firmer footing for the future. Both events take place later this month, with Gowkfest on Saturday 22nd August and the Flower Show on Saturday 29th August.
The hall at the heart of village life.
Throughout the year Gordon Village Hall continued to host a regular programme of activities including Pickleball, Pilates and Zumba, alongside private bookings and community events. The trustees remain committed to keeping the hall an affordable and accessible space for everyone in the village.
In December 2025 a ceiling collapse forced the hall to close for around eight weeks while repairs were carried out. Thanks to the swift response of trustees and volunteers the building was made safe, repairs were completed, and regular activities resumed in mid-February without lasting disruption. An insurance claim in connection with the incident is still being managed.
Our Finances
The charity’s accounts are prepared on a receipts and payments basis. Income of £9,700 came from a mix of hall hire and bookings, fundraising, donations and a £500 grant from Borders Community Action towards insurance costs. Expenditure of £5,900 covered utilities, maintenance, improvements, insurance and the costs of running fundraising events. At the year end the charity held total funds of £18,300, of which £5,500 is restricted or set aside for specific purposes, including £1,700 designated for Gordon Primary School, leaving £12,700 unrestricted.
The trustees have adopted a formal reserves policy which sets aside funds both for day-to-day running costs and towards major or unforeseen repairs to the building.
Thanks to volunteers.
The trustees were keen to record their thanks to the many volunteers who give their time freely, running activities, managing bookings, caring for the building and organising events, as well as to the local businesses that supported the charity’s work during the year.
At the meeting. Chair Graeme MacLeod presented the Chair’s report and Treasurer Lesley Capstick presented the annual accounts, which were adopted. A resolution to increase the maximum number of trustees from eight to ten was put to the meeting and carried.
Trustees retiring by rotation were re-appointed at the board meeting that followed, and office-bearers were elected: Chair - Graeme MacLeod ; Treasurer - Lesley Capstick ; Secretary - Claire Welsh.
