Gordon Flower Show

Gordon Flower Show is held each year when the hall fills with flowers, vegetables, baking, preserves, handicrafts and children’s work, all grown, made and baked locally. In February 2026 the show became a sub-committee of Gordon Common Good SCIO, which gives it a settled home for its finances and governance while the show itself carries on being run by the same volunteers.

What the Show Is

The show is held at Gordon Village Hall on the last Saturday of August or thereabouts, and is confined to Legerwood, Westruther and Gordon Parish, Mellerstain, Fans and Hume. Exhibits are staged in the morning, judged behind closed doors, and the hall opens to visitors in the afternoon for the official opening, the presentation of the trophies, and tea and home baking.

Entry is deliberately easy: 20p a class for adults, free for children and students, one entry per class, and entry cards available from The Gordon Arms Café or at the hall on the morning. Many of the trophies have been competed for over generations, and the Gordon School art work classes mean most children in the village have something on the wall.

A Sub-Committee of Gordon Common Good SCIO

As a sub-committee, the Flower Show plans and runs the show within a budget and programme agreed each year by the Board of Trustees of Gordon Common Good SCIO. All income and spending goes through the Common Good’s account, with the show’s Finance Officer working alongside the Common Good Treasurer, and any surplus supports the charity’s purposes. The Trustee member of the sub-committee reports back to the Board, and the sub-committee provides a written update after each formal meeting — the proposed budget in February, and a post-event summary within four weeks of the show.

Terms of Reference

The sub-committee’s remit, membership, officers, meetings, decision-making, reporting and finances are set out in its Terms of Reference, agreed by the Board of Trustees and reviewed annually.
