Gordon Village

Gordon Parish Church · Linked with Earlston, Greenlaw and Legerwood

We are a small and very friendly congregation, and you will always be made welcome — whether you come along most months, look in at Easter or Christmas, or simply turn up for one of our community events. We would be delighted to see you.

Sunday services

All our Sunday services start at 10am, and everyone stays on afterwards for a cuppa and a biscuit.

Every month

First & Third Sunday

Morning service in the church at 10am.

Fifth Sunday

We join the congregation from Greenlaw, alternating between Gordon Church and the Fairbairn Hall in Greenlaw.

Talented organists play at all of our services.

Through the year

As well as our regular Sundays, we mark the seasons with special services:

The school, and Westruther

Gordon Primary School often holds its end-of-term assembly in the church, with many of the children taking part and everyone enjoying the singing.

Westruther is now part of Gordon Parish, and each December we hold a Carols and Cakes service in Westruther Village Hall, where all are welcome. In 2025 it was a Scratch Nativity, with plenty of carols — and plenty of cake.

Our COP26 oak

In 2021 we planted an oak in Gordon Community Woodland for COP26 Global Action Day, at an informal gathering with prayer, music and songs.

It is still growing away quietly among the birches. Next time you are out in the wood, see if you can spot it.

Fun events

Every year we put on a few events that are for the whole village, not just the congregation. They are well attended, thoroughly informal, and everyone is welcome.

Autumn

Harvest Supper

Live music and plenty of good food.

Christmas

Carols for Shelter

A sing-along in the church for all ages, with carol singing, live music and, of course, cakes.

All ages

Ceilidh

A relaxed and very popular family night, with everyone up dancing to live music — and an exceptionally good supper.

Civic Week

Picnic after the service

A village favourite, with the Queen, her Flag Bearer and attendants.

December

Carols and Cakes at Westruther

Festive singing in Westruther Village Hall, followed by tea and cake.

Dates for special services and events are posted here on the village website and on the Gordon Parish Church Facebook page.

A little history

There has been a church in Gordon since the 12th century, but it did not take its name until 28 March 1242, when Bishop David de Bernham dedicated it to St Michael.

The present building was put up around 1763 and renovated in 1897. There are stained glass windows at either end, and an excellent pipe organ, rebuilt in the church by our current organist.

In 2025 we linked with Earlston, Greenlaw and Legerwood Churches, and together we are seeking a new minister for the linkage.
