Gordon Community Woodland belongs to the community, and it stays in good heart because local people give it their time. There are lots of ways to be part of it, whatever time you have to spare — and none of them need any special skills.
Come to a work day
The Trust holds work days through the year — clearing paths, pruning, planting, tidying up and generally keeping the wood in good order. They're friendly, sociable mornings, and a nice way to learn a little about the wood while you're at it. Bring stout boots and gloves; the rest is usually provided.
Dates are shared on the Trust's Facebook page.
Become a member, or renew
Membership is open to everyone, and the annual subscription — just a pound or two — helps keep the wood free and open for all.
| Membership type | Who it's for | Annual fee | Vote? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ordinary — Individual | Aged 16+, household on the Gordon electoral roll (Polling District 19B) | £2 | Yes |
| Ordinary — Organisation | Principal place of business in Polling District 19B | £10 | Yes |
| Associate — Individual | Aged 16+, not on the Gordon electoral roll | £1 | No |
| Associate — Organisation | Based outside the Gordon area | £5 | No |
Subscriptions run from 1 April each year. Ordinary membership is for people and organisations in Gordon itself; Associate membership is for friends of the wood from further afield. Associate members are very welcome at everything, though they don't have a vote.
Once you've applied, the committee will be in touch to confirm your membership and sort out payment. For now, payment can be made by standing order or cheque.
Join or renew online →If you'd rather fill in a paper form, just ask any committee member, or get in touch through the Facebook page.
Join the Management Group
The wood is run by a small Management Group that meets regularly in the village. Meetings are open to all, and new members are genuinely welcome — the group is always glad of fresh faces and new ideas. If you'd like to get more closely involved, just come along.
Events through the year
Nature surveys
Moth and bat evenings, dawn-chorus walks, fungal forays and pond-dipping sessions — all organised through the year.
Family activities
Easter egg hunts, willow craft, bushcraft and children's holiday activities. The wood is a venue as much as a place to walk.
Christmas trees
In the run-up to Christmas, the Trust traditionally sells Norway spruce on a pick-your-own basis — a lovely way to choose your tree and support the wood at the same time. Check the Facebook page for dates.
Get in touch
